Bennie Speaking Spanish

Bennie owned The City Barber Shop in Douglasville, Georgia for many years.

I’d go up every few weeks to get my ears lowered (i.e., hair cut). Bennie would do the hair cut for free and would not allow me to pay him since I was married to his daughter. Plus, he knew I didn’t have a lot of money anyway.

He was always telling me about conversations he had with his customers, and one of them was a Mexican guy who didn’t speak much English. After he got his haircut, he’d always tell Bennie he didn’t have any money, in Spanish.

“Yo tengo no dinero,” the man would say. Which translates into “I don’t have any money.”

True story.
