I suppose Kim was in her mid-twenties and I got the bright idea of setting up a surprise birthday party for her. Grandmother agreed to cook a meal and we would have a surprise birthday party for her at Grandmother’s house.
The day comes and I told Kim that whatever she wanted to do, that’s what we were going to do that day. It was her birthday!
She said, “Well, let’s go to Grant Park.”
So I took her to Grant Park, and we enjoyed the zoo. Later that evening, I said, “You know what, any place you want to eat, I will take you. It’s your birthday!”
She said, “Well, let’s go to Ray’s On The River.”Now, Ray’s is a bit expensive, but I had told her I would take her wherever she wanted to go, and I wasn’t going to back down now. So we get to Ray’s and placed our order.
We’re waiting on the food to arrive and all of a sudden, I froze. No! It couldn’t be! I didn’t mess this up, did I? Surely not!

Kim saw my face and asked what’s wrong. Already knowing the answer, I ask her what day it is. She told me, and I just hung my head in shame. I said, “Kim, I planned a surprise birthday for you… we are supposed to be at Grandmother’s right now!”
Sure enough, Grandmother had done her part and prepared a big meal. Mother, Dad, and I don’t know who all else were gathered at Grandmother’s and wondering where on earth Daryl and Kim were. After all, I was the one who set up the surprise birthday! But we had already ordered our food and were probably 45 minutes away and it was already getting a bit late, so I didn’t know what the right thing to do was. I finally decided to call them, and tell them we weren’t going to make it, and we ate at Ray’s that night. It seemed like the right thing to do at the moment, but I will always regret not immediately hopping in the car and heading to Grandmother’s even if we were late.
