It’s funny what goes through kids’ minds when they hear things that adults think should be very clear.
Mrs. Cook was a mom across the street from us when we moved to Douglasville when I was in the 4th grade. One day, we kids were getting ready to take off for an adventure in the woods behind their house. She told us kids that we should never EVER go with strangers because they could possibly do unspeakable things to us. She said we should fight like heck to get away.
When I asked, “What if they start hurting us to make us go????” she made it clear that even death could be a better choice than compliance.
She said, “If they do, that tells you they could do MUCH worse things if they have you! It’s better to get hurt trying to get away!”
That was clear! I never forgot that.

She also had to explain to me what it meant to be raped. I’m sure she was very uncomfortable with that, but she stifled her hesitance to make sure we understood how important it was to stay safe.
I’m also sure that she told my mother about the conversation. Mother also had a long talk with me shortly after that.
They deserve the heavenly wings they have today for the many, MANY wonderful things they did for their children.
