Circa 1861, Fredrick Thompson was minding his own business, just walking along Hiram Sudie Road in Dallas, Georgia.
Some Confederate soldiers came up on him and said, “You’re going with us!”
They drafted him into the Army on the spot and didn’t even let him go home to tell his family. On they marched wih Fredrick as their newest draftee.
When they got to Alabama, there was a man sitting on a porch and had four teenaged sons sitting around the porch with him. The commanding officer told the man the same thing they had told Fredrick. They wanted to draft him on the spot. But this man refused.
The officer said, “Well. Take your pick: it’s either you or all your boys.”.
I’m guessing the man was immediately on his way with the other soldiers…
Luckily, Fredrick drove a supply wagon to replenish Confederate troops. He was never in active combat that we know of, but I’m sure he must have seen a lot of the struggles, the injured and the dead.
Note: The wagon pic is one Beverly pulled from the web for a Confederate supply wagon. It is probably not Great Grandpa Thompson’s, but it could’ve been. 🙂
