In 1970, the Beatles came out with a song that became one of my favorites. I learned to play it on the piano, I sang it constantly and turned up the radio every time it came on.
One night, Mother was finishing supper, Daddy and I were sitting at the table talking about stuff that had happened that day. As she frequently did, Mother started singing softly. If not, she started singing “Let It Be.”
I turned and looked at her in amazement. She never thought as much as Daddy, but they both made it clear that they didn’t approve of my listening to rock music. They wouldn’t forbid it, but they just tried to teach me that it was wrong.
So that night when Mother started singing what became a smash Hit for the Beatles tapping charts all over the world, I couldn’t help but tease her about it a little bit.
She didn’t miss a beat. She said, “I was NOT singing the Beatles. She insisted that she was singing the hymn “Just A Closer Walk With Thee.”
My grandma didn’t raise no fool or a liar. Mother quickly changed the tune to be the version we all knew from the church hymnal.
