The Day The Music Died

I’m not saying Elvis is still alive, BUT..

I perfectly remember the day in 1977 when my son was about 8 months old and playing on the floor in front of the sofa between me and the tv.  As soon as Brandon stretched out like a little doll sound asleep, a special News break interrupted my show and announced that Elvis Presley was dead.

I started crying and, a minute later, Danny came through the door from work.  He took one look at my tears, saw Brandon stretched out on the floor and immediately burst into tears himself running over to Brandon crying, “Oh my God! He’s dead! He’s dead!”

You can only imagine his relief when Brandon opened his little eyes. Then, I told him that Elvis had just died.

Since we didn’t have the Internet and being a total bookworm, I read the AJC front to back every day and went to the public library in Carrollton at least twice a week.  So I knew about the FBI’s “Operation Fountain Pen” and Elvis assisting in a sting targeting organized crime in Las Vegas.

A few days after Brandon’s nap in front of the tv, I told Danny, “I don’t believe Elvis is dead. I think he had to go undercover because of the Mafia.”

Today, the story about Elvis’ involvement and Nixon’s letter to him have been completely changed to an entirely different story.  It’s now reported that Elvis visited the White House, met with Nixon and offered to help because of all of his contacts in Las Vegas where organized crime was rampant.  Now the story has changed saying the subsequent letter the President sent was a polite rejection.

There’s even one version that says Elvis’ father was the one helping the FBI after the star’s financial loss in a massive scam.

But those of us old enough to remember don’t buy it.

It is interesting to ponder whether or not Pastor Bob Joyce is really Elvis.  Because of the secrecy and explosive information around Elvis’ death, we may never know.  But I happen to think it’s absolutely possible.

There are so many things that support the theory:

* Pastor Bob is married to one of Elvis’ first girlfriends.

* He sounds JUST LIKE Elvis when he talks and when he sings.

* Pastor Bob has the same smile that Elvis had before his 1956 dental work adding a crown to perfect his smile and erase the gap in his teeth.

Pastor Bob refuses DNA tests but consistently and adamantly refuses any truth to the rumors that he is Elvis.

Still, I want me, Diane and Pam to make reservations to attend a Sunday service at Pastor Bob’s church in Benton, Arkansas sometime soon.  Who knows?  Maybe we really will see Elvis!
