Note: For some reason I can NOT get the links in this post to go to the proper place. I’ve updated it several times and they still are messed up. I will get with my hosting service to find out what the problem is because that should not be happening. My apologies in advance if you have trouble getting the correct links to open.
Today my friend, Brad, Facebook posted a controversial song from the ’70s by The Hollies. The Hollies was one of my favorite groups as a teenager. Hence, this post.
Like most teenagers in the 1970s I fell in love with the music of our decade: 70s Rock. And, of course, my parents thought it was a bad influence and nothing close to being real music. It was just jangled noise!* 🤣
Oh! And … ahem… read the italicized next paragraph really fast. You know. Like the car salesmen on TV who recite disclaimers about the newest deals:
They also feared it was Satanic in nature which mirrored opinions of many churchgoing parents who didn’t want their children to listen to this devil music and be led down a path of destruction.
Actually… there was that one BFD (best friend dad) who I thought was SO GROOVY😁… Rhonda’s dad, George, loved Janis Joplin and especially “Me And Bobby McGee.” How cool is THAT when a friend’s dad likes the kind of music you do? I couldn’t get my parents to even listen to one of my favs like Ray Steven’s “Everything Is Beautiful.” 🙄🤣
My attempts to gain their acceptance of my music never materialized, but they did finally stop trying to keep me from listening to it. I think they finally realized it was an unsuccessful mission. I LOVED IT! From the bubblegum pop of the Archies to the psychedelic rock of Iron Butterfly, I loved it all.
One of my absolute favorite songs 1971-Present is by the Hollies, I LOVED “Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress.” The beat is, to me, energizing and definitely a mood upper (a lot like “Money For Nothingn”).
If truth be told, the music is what I’m crazy about. Listening to the words of “Long Cool Woman” is kinda like watching Robert Mitchum’s cult classic movie Thunder Road in less than 5 minutes. 😁 Still good but a short story in song about Prohibition doesn’t add anything to elevate the mood like the music does.
I actually created a list that I created several years ago of many of my favorite songs of that decade. And just like every other teenager, I always think my decade produced THE Best decade of music.
I’ll see if I can find that list, and I’ll put it somewhere on this blog and the link at the bottom of this one. I’m sure that, in 10 or 20 or 40 years from now, I’ll get a kick out of coming across it one day and remembering how much fun I had!
While searching Google for a picture of the peace sign of the ’70s, I came across this image. I have to add it. My favorite “hot pants” culottes jumper was actually sewn by Mother and had this almost identical pattern. Talk about a flood of memories!!!! FAR OUT! FLOWER POWER!
PEACE! (If my kid read this, I can just see them rolling their eyes! lolol)

I have seen many older family members and friends who forget as they get older and not necessarily from a condition like dementia. Sometimes, it’s just the stretch of years that leaves some memories harder to recall.
* Being a little honest here, every generation has its subgenres of music that probably aren’t healthy. But I was not nor am I now interested in that kind of music that touts perversion and immorality. I was a typical rebellious teenager but I wasn’t stupid! Daddy would have killed me! 🤣
